One is the Loneliest Writer: Why Writing Groups Keep Writers Sane

Posted by on 26 May, 2013

I don’t know about the rest of you, but too much time in my head is not always a good thing. While I love solitude, thrive on it sometimes, without interaction with other creative minds, my internal conversations risk exposure.

Hubby: Who are you talking to?

Me: Ummmmmmm. Me?

Sound familiar? My former boss once told me not to worry about talking to yourself. When self starts talking back, then you have a problem.

For a long time I wrote in solitude in the sense that I desperately wanted to ask other romance writers genre specific questions, but I didn’t know any rom writers. As I’ve mentioned before, I joined RWAC a year ago and these thirty plus women have become my mentors and friends.

On Friday coming, I’m hopping a plane to go meet them in person for the first time and I’m so excited I could pee! Well, probably not that excited, but I have started bouncing again. I swear to God.

So what has this writer’s group done for me? I can sum it up in one word. Direction. By sharing in their experiences, challenges, and triumphs, I was able to see my path more clearer by the minute. I am forever grateful for the fellowship I’ve found in this group.

Then there’s the Scribe Wenches here in the province. Started by Melanie Martin and I in 2009, we went it alone for three years and then all of a sudden at the beginning of 2013, BOOM! We now have seven very active members, one more on the way and man have we ever covered a lot of ground in a short time. The group is not genre specific, but there’s a lot we all need to know about the ever changing publishing industry especially in terms of authors marketing their work.

Both groups keep me hoppin’ and I love it!

Cheers to you Scribe Wenches for another fabulous meeting today.

Cheers to RWAC for all your fabulousness. See you on Friday.

I agree Kate! The RWAC is great, and well, as a wench, I think we rock. Thanks for letting me be a wench with you. ๐Ÿ™‚

Can’t wait to see you! I agree, since joining RWAC I have gone from being a writer to being a WRITER. It is so great to be able to talk shop with people who know what you’re doing. ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes, we Scribe Wenches rock! Which reminds me, we should make a plan for getting our SW blog up and running … I guess it’ll be this time next year since so many of our projects are getting published in 2013. ๐Ÿ˜€

Yes, I think that’s a definite plan. I have the domain purchased already, just need to find some time with you guys to plan the look and feel. Might be a nice summer project for when our regular meetings wind down.
